Chapter 30 - Nothing is so Simple

Jim stepped through the portal and came out into a dark, empty room that stretched further than expected and had a high ceiling that could have been a dozen stories tall. It seemed like some warehouse in the city that was tucked away deep within the mazes that were the random pathways and streets. Kolis had sprawled after a certain point. Turning into something unwieldily and filled with nooks and crannies only the most experienced city goers knew about.

Perfect for organized crime to stay outside of the limelight. Doing as they pleased without anyone there to see or suspect anything at all.

In the empty room there were only two things of note.

A long table with seven seats and a single throne of skulls on an ornate stone dais that stretched enough for a dozen people to stand on it comfortably. It was covered in carvings of animals of both the mythical and more mundane variety.

Every seat had an occupant except a single one. Jim assumed that it had been Ebeprix’s before he had killed him a few days ago.

The death knight was on its knees. Vinay stood before the long table and ahead of his summons, bleeding out of his mouth. He was standing tall even though he was being given the full attention of the man sitting on the throne seat. Shadows surrounded the person and made it hard to make out his exact figure. Just a general gender assessment.

Jim knew he could break through the masking ability with ease, but it would alert them of his arrival.

So, he shifted his attention to the rest of the occupants of the room he had not taken notice of. A fat man wearing ostentatious clothing he assumed must have been the Marquis. The dozen or so kids huddled in one corner, their eyes burned with unrestrained passion and anger at their situation. They hadn’t been harmed yet.

Then finally to the occupants of the seats, including Gadriel, Magnus, and Ligandus. The three were bruised and bleeding after the beating they had taken from Vinay and his summons. A couple healers were currently attending to them.

Everyone else was currently discussing something or another between themselves, some clearly snickering at the three who fought. Joking at their expense.

Jim considered just having Elsie teleport him, Vinay, and the kids out of the warehouse. He doubted anyone in the room could stop them if he decided they wanted to leave, but his curiosity kept him there. It hadn’t been ten seconds since Vinay had entered before them and he was already bleeding and his death knight was on the ground and weakened.

There was no sign of the skeleton warriors.

“You should know that killing me won't help you, Shadow Spawn.” Vinay said with as much confidence as he had when he was slapping Gadriel around. “Your death will be far more brutal if anything does occur to the kids or if I don't return with them.”

Jim looked back at the person seated on the throne.
